Sweepstakes Casino News: Week of August 17-21, 2026

Florida became the story this week. Here is what we could confirm from primary documents, with a source on every line.

August 19: Florida sues Stake and VGW

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced two lawsuits against sweepstakes casino operators and the payment companies that serve them. The release names Stake and VGW's Chumba Casino, LuckyLand and Global Poker.

Both complaints were filed in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit for Hillsborough County. The court stamps show them e-filed minutes apart on the morning of August 19, 2026.

The VGW complaint names seven VGW entities in Delaware, Australia and Malta, plus payment and data firms Yodlee, Trustly and Worldpay Holdco.

The Stake complaint names Sweepsteaks Ltd, which does business as Stake.us, along with Easygo Group Holdings, Medium Rare N.V., Kick Streaming, Praxis Tech, Breeze Labs Payments, and founders Bijan Tehrani and Ed Craven.

What the state is asking for

Each complaint runs two counts: forfeiture and recovery of money lost gambling, and violations of Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. The state wants permanent injunctions barring the defendants from operating or soliciting in Florida, plus disgorgement, restitution, civil penalties and fees, per the AG's release.

One number worth flagging: the state alleges VGW took in more than $5 billion in 2025, with $3.7 billion of that from Chumba Casino alone. That is an allegation in a filed complaint, not a proven fact, and no defendant has answered yet.

August 21: nobody has pulled out of Florida

As of publication, the geo-restriction notices on Chumba Casino and Global Poker list the same two groups of states. Fully unavailable: Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Washington. Gold Coin play only, with sweepstakes switched off: California, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Florida is on neither list. We found no operator announcement of a Florida exit this week.

August 17: 60 machines seized in Cape Coral

Two days before the lawsuits, the Florida Gaming Control Commission and Cape Coral police seized 60 illegal slot machines from a business trading as a bingo hall. That is a land-based case, not a sweepstakes one, but it shows the posture Florida regulators were already in.

August 24: LuckyLand Slots games go dark

LuckyLand Slots' own closure page sets out three dates. Gold Coin purchases ended August 3, 2026. Games stop being playable on August 24, 2026, with redemptions still open. The site closes permanently on September 14, 2026, after which no further redemption requests are accepted.

CoinFrenzy is winding down

The notice on CoinFrenzy's site says purchases are permanently disabled, existing balances can be used or redeemed until September 25, 2026, and access to the platform ends after September 26, 2026.

Where state law stands

Louisiana's two gambling acts, Act 182 on enforcement of illegal online gambling and Act 48 adding gambling crimes as racketeering predicates, both carry an effective date of August 1, 2026.

Maine's online sweepstakes ban was signed April 6, 2026 as Chapter 645. California's AB 831 was chaptered October 11, 2025. Operators have sweepstakes play switched off in all three states.

Oklahoma is next. SB 1589 was vetoed on May 7, 2026, then overridden by the Senate 34-10 on May 11 and the House 68-19 on May 14. The enrolled text makes it a Class C2 felony for a platform provider, promoter or media affiliate to deal or provide the games, and takes effect November 1, 2026.
